Langmuir has published a virtual issue entitled “Growth of Colloid and Interface Science”, which is dedicated to the scientific work of Helmuth Möhwald (1946–2018). Former coworkers of Helmuth Möhwald report in 12 articles on current research topics, which had been initiated with Helmuth. The virtual issue contains 12 additional articles published previously in ACS journals. Guest editors: Profs. Regine v. Klitzing und Thomas Zemb, Langmuir Senior Editor: Prof. Walter Richtering. The annual conference for young scientists took place during July 10-12, 2019, for the first time at Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung (IPF) in Dresden. The Zsigmondy-Kolloquium addresses young researchers at the PhD student and postdoc level in the field of colloids, surfaces und inferfaces. The conference series is named after the Austrian-Hungarian chemist Richard A. Zsigmondy (born 1 April 1865 in Vienna, died 23 September 1929 in Göttingen), who is known as researcher in the field of colloidal chemistry and microscopy and as Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (1925). Helmut Möhwald (Max Planck Institute for Colloid and Interface Science, Golm) initiated the conference series.
The Zsigmondy Colloquium 2019 at IPF Dresden covered various topics, such as the synthesis of colloidal particles, their multi-scale assembly, their optical and electronic properties and the properties as functional materials. Colloidal particles are dielectric, metallic or semi-conducting nanoparticles. Via controlled self-assembly, these colloids can acquire special spectroscopic and optical properties. Such material properies are also part of the Freigeist research group of Dr. Tobias A.F. König, who has organized the conference. The event had about 90 participants. The scientific program consisted of 34 oral contributions, two invited lectures, and 36 poster contributions.

The prize for the best oral presentation was awarded to Hanbo Yang (third from the right), University of Melbourne. The prizes for the best posters in the categories gold, silver and bronze were awarded to Fabian Schröer (center), HHU Düsseldorf, Teresa Walter (third from the left), FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and Dimitri Wilms (second from the left), HHU Düsseldorf.

The Zsigmondy Colloquium established a connection between „classical colloid scientists" und „semiconductor-nanocrystal researchers“. These two communities were als represented in the organizing committee [chair Dr. Tobias A. F. König (Colloidal Nanophotonics, IPF), Prof. Dr. Andreas Fery (Institute of Physical Chemistry and Polymer Physics, IPF) and Prof. Dr. Alexander Eychmüller (Physical Chemistry, TU Dresden)] and the advisory board [Priv.-Doz. Dr. habil. Alla Synytska (IPF), Dr. Günter K. Auernhammer (IPF), Prof. Dr. Nikolai Gaponik (TU Dresden) and Dr. Vladimir Lesnyak (TU Dresden)].
The Colloid Society mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Helmuth Möhwald.
Prof. Dr. Helmuth Möhwald died on March 27, 2018. He was closely connected to Colloid Society for many years. In 1998 he was the first Liesegang Prize winner, and from 2003 to 2007 he was chairman of the Colloid Society. Until 2017 he continued to support work of the Colloid Society very actively as a member of the advisory board. In 2009 the Colloid Society awarded him the Ostwald Prize. Helmuth Möhwald was an outstanding scientist and will be remembered as an impressive personality and very inspiring person.
The 14th Zsigmondy Colloquium of the Colloid Society took place in Mainz from April 9th to 11th. The almost 100 participants discussed the properties of surfaces and interfaces with 36 lectures and 35 posters.
